Retract and Replace
Occasionally, an article will be retracted but we will allow the article to be published as a new version with updated and/or removed data.
The retracted article should go through the usual retraction procedure.
Add the word “RETRACTED:” to the beginning of the retracted version’s title. This was recommended as standard practice for all retractions by Google Scholar.
Add the RETRACTED stamp to all pages of the PDF.
DOI conventions:
https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20120950 (original article)
https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20120950<date>r (Retraction)
https://doi.org/10.1084/jem.20120950<date>new (new article)
For the new article, the <date> should be the month (two digits) and year (four digits) the article was submitted.
New article:
Create a new record in EJP, with a new license, disclosure forms, etc., and edit the manuscript number and DOI accordingly.
Use a new title for the new article to avoid confusion with the old article.
The new article's TOC blurb (abstract-type="teaser") should include an explanation of the scenario.
When necessary/desired, include a short editorial explanation above the introduction of the new manuscript.
The "Open Access" field in JPS should be set to Free so it is accessible to everyone. In the XML, add <?release-delay 0|0?> so that the article is immediately available on PMC.
Authors should not be invoiced for the new article. A 100% discount named "Retract and Replace" is available and should be chosen upon export from EJP, just like waiver discounts.
Retraction:
The Retraction should use "Retract and Replace:" at the beginning of the title (instead of the usual "Retraction:").
"Retract and Replace" is also what should display as the article type at the top of the PDF and online article. However, be sure to use the standard retraction article type in the XML.
Linking/relationships:
Link the Retraction to the retracted paper as usual.
Link the new article to the retraction as a "related" related article type (this link should exist in the new article's XML, not in the retraction's). Check in with Camille when you release this paper - TNQ needs to change the article type for PMC deposit.
Do not link the new article to the original article (though readers can get there via the retraction).
[side note: Silverchair does support 'new_version' article type, and that is supported by Crossmark, but in Aug 2023, the editors did not want to use this, opting to use the retraction as the only bridge between the two articles]
[side note 2: until Silverchair makes an adjustment to their rules, the related-article-type for the retracted paper needs to be changed before you publish on Zipline. Check with Camille.]
Publication:
The retraction and the new article should be published on the same day.
The new article and the retraction should be in the same issue and should follow one another in order on the TOC.
